State-owned mining company Mini Maritsa Iztok was established in 1993 as the legal successor of Troyanovo-1 Mine, Troyanovo-North Mine and Troyanovo-3 Mine. It is the largest coal mining company in the country and holds a 35-year concession for the extraction of coal from Iztochnomarishki coal basin deposit.
The productive area of the coalfield is around 240 square kilometres. Three opencast mines operate on the territory of the complex – Troyanovo-1 Mine, Troyanovo-North Mine and Troyanovo-3 Mine. As of end-2012 the reserves of the complex totalled 2,046 million tonnes of lignite. The lignite produced by the company is intended for supplying the state-owned Maritsa East Two power plant, ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3, AES Galabovo and local thermal power plant and briquette producer Brikel.
