Natural gas continues to outpace crude oil as China’s leading hydrocarbon resource in terms of exploration and development. In 2020, China's natural gas output increased by 9.8% y/y to 192.5bcm. Coalbed methane production totalled 6.7bcm, up by 13.5% y/y, shale gas output exceeded 20bcm, an increase of 32.6% y/y, and coal-to-natural gas output reached 4.7bcm, rising by 8.8% y/y. As one of the world’s largest natural gas consumers, China relies heavily on imports, but at the same time the government is boosting efforts to increase domestic natural gas production. The growth rate of China’s natural gas production has outpaced its consumption growth for two consecutive years and many gas basins, such as the Sichuan Basin, have made numerous discoveries in the shale gas segment, supporting higher output in future.
